Big prize fund for Golovane: R10 000 for men's and women's winners

THE 2011 John Dory's Golovane mountain bike race at Holla Trails on July 10 is attracting some early attention from some of the country's top riders with a healthy prize fund attracting the interest of some of the sport's top protagonists.

With the winning woman collecting the same R10 000 first prize as the top male, and a total prize fund of over R50 000, it is not just the top men who will be benefitting from the decision by John Dory's to create a prize fund which rewards riders for their efforts.
There will be three events, the main 50km John Dory's Golovane is expected to be a tough battle up front in both the men's and women's races with some of the country's top riders already indicating that they will be making the trip to KZN to fight for the title.
The Johannesburg-based RE:CM duo of Waylon Woolcock and Neil MacDonald, who burst on to the MTB scene in May and dominated some big events, have indicated they may take part, while former SA Champion Brandon Stewart from Pietermaritzburg has indicated he will also be entering the event.

The relatively easy 20km intermediate event caters more for the younger riders, while the short 6km kids fun ride is aimed at the children.

The 2011 Golovane will be the fourth time this event takes place and offers riders a great overall test of mountain biking skills and fitness. The earlier parts of the course contain the bulk of the climbing and is mostly on district and cane roads. Thereafter riders are rewarded with kilometres of spectacular single track and some stunning natural forest riding. The single track is a combination of fast, flowing sections and some tight, twisty segments which will reward the better bike handlers.

Entries are open at www.roag.co.za.

Holla Trails was established soon after the first Golovane event and has become one of the favourite training and riding venues for mountain bikers in KZN with hundreds of kilometres of trails with a wide variety of conditions. Riders can choose from the long 80km route which is a favourite for riders training for ultra marathon events, to the shorter kids routes and single-track routes which cater for those looking for some fun. The Golovane race blends different sections of these routes together to create an interesting test for both weekend warriors and the racing snakes.
