2. INITIAL PRE-HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT OF SNAKE BITE
- Before leaving, check that the emergency telephone number is stored in your phone
- In the case of a snake bite, immobilise the patient and keep them calm and call the emergency number immediately, do not delay. If alone, keep calm and do not continue cycling, sit down alert a fellow rider and ask them to phone the emergency number and ask them not to leave you until help arrives. The person phoning may have to ride to a higher point for cell phone signal. If you have a GPS unit get a GPS co-ordinate of the snake bite victim to aid with recovery
- Lie down, keep calm and keep hydrated
- Do not suck the bite site - Do not apply a tourniquet
- Comforting and reassuring the patient is a very important part of the first aid treatment.
- Try to get a good description of the snake
- Paramedics will have the necessary equipment to treat snake bites and will transfer the patient to Alberlito Hospital in Ballito
- Notes:
- In most cases, victims have a couple of hours before serious life-threatening symptoms manifest themselves.
- ONLY in suspected neurotoxic bites (mamba, Cape cobra), it is recommended that you apply a wide crepe bandage (or other material) firmly above the bite site (as tightly as for a sprained ankle) to slow the spread of venom to vital organs like the heart and lungs.
- The life threatening neurotoxic effects of Mamba and Cape Cobra bites (such as difficulty in breathing) develop within 30 min to 4 hours. If you are more than 2 hrs away from medical assistance, respiratory support (e.g. mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) may be necessary.
- The life threatening effects of a cytotoxic snake bite (e.g. puff adder) develop late (6-24 hours).
- Wait for medical assistance to arrive

3. EXPECTED WEATHER

3. HOLLA TRAILS INTRODUCTION
|
 |
The race will also mark the introduction of the new Holla Trails, a system of marked mountain biking trails among the farms in the Ballito area similar to that of the EMBA system on Tongaat Hulett land in and around Durban. Only riders with a Holla permit will be allowed access to farmland in the Ballito, Compensation and Upper Tongaat area.
This arrangement has been carefully negotiated with private landowners who have become concerned with the number of mountain bikers riding through their lands and the risks they carry should someone be injured on their lands without having indemnified the land owners of all risk. Only Holla permit holders will be allowed to ride this extensive area without the risk of trespassing and liabilities.
Holla Trails will consist of hundreds of kilometers of marked trails for both novice and experienced mountain bikers.
|
The Holla Trails Centre will be a great venue where riders will be able to park their cars in a secure environment, and shower after their ride before enjoying drinks and food on the vast terrace. Wayne Hulett has already set the standard with the top rated Collisheen wedding venue and at Holla Trails he intends to create an environment where the whole family can enjoy the space to play, ride and relax in the countryside. A BMX track and kids trails will be developed as soon as they can be funded. The mountain biking trails in the area are almost limitless and simply need to be marked out. The trails venue will have its official opening on the 1st of March when the first 45 km of marked trail is expected to be ready. From then on the only limitation will be the time it will take to map and mark the trails (and your stamina).
A special joining membership will be available to all participants taking part in the inaugural Golovane X-plore – register your interest on Sunday if you are keen on joining. |
Finally, enjoy the route and venue; take time to look around at the view and vegetation. Look after your partner and please no littering.
We look forward to hosting you and getting your feedback about the route and the race.
All the best
Nic, Wayne, Tim and Andrew
